Bipul Chettri is an Indian singer-songwriter of Nepalese descent, known for his unique fusion of Himalayan folk music with contemporary sounds. Singing primarily in the Nepali language, Bipul’s music blends traditional folk with modern melodies, creating a fresh and distinct style. His debut album, Sketches of Darjeeling, was released in 2014, followed by his sophomore album Maya in 2016. Over the years, he has released several singles, including Basant, Gahiro Gahiro, Ashish, Teesta, Mughlan, Neela Akash, and Salala. His EP, Samaya, was released in 2021. Bipul is currently based in New Delhi, India.
Early Life
Bipul was born into a family with a strong musical legacy. His grandfather was a poet, and his grandmother played the sitar. His father, who was also musically inclined, performed in Darjeeling and Kurseong before passing away when Bipul was very young. Bipul credits his father with nurturing his love for music, which ultimately led him to pursue a career as a musician.
Bipul attended St. Augustine’s School in Kalimpong, Darjeeling, where he was a regular performer. He later picked up the western classical guitar as his primary instrument and graduated with a Licentiate of Trinity College, London (LTCL) in Western Classical Guitar from the Trinity Music School of London.
Musical Career
Bipul’s journey into the music world began with the release of his song Wildfire (Dadelo) on SoundCloud in February 2013. This track marked the start of his musical career and laid the foundation for his debut album, Sketches of Darjeeling. The album received positive reviews and gained significant attention in the indie music scene.
In recognition of his talent, Bipul was named the ‘Top Selling Artist for 2014-15’ and ranked in the Top Ten for 2015-16 on OKListen.Com, an indie music retail platform in India. His debut album won multiple awards, including the ‘Pop-Rock Album of the Year’ at the Hero Hits FM 91.2 Awards, along with accolades for Best Pop-Rock Composition of the Year and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance of the Year for his song “Syndicate”.
Bipul followed up with Maya in 2016 and a series of singles over the years, including Basant (2017), Gahiro Gahiro (2018), Teesta (2019), Mughlan (2019), Aashish (2019), Neela Akash (2020), and Salala (2024). His 2021 EP Samaya further solidified his presence in the music scene.
Bipul is also a part of The Travelling Band, which accompanies him for all his live performances.
