Karna Das (Pariyar)

Karna Das (Nepali: कर्ण दास), born on November 24, 1974, in Pokhara, Nepal, is a multifaceted Nepali musician, singer, songwriter, lyricist, composer, and record producer. Revered as a “living legend” of the Nepali music landscape, Das is known for his soothing and melodious timbre, which has won the hearts of millions. His songwriting reflects immense depth and sincerity, often touching on philosophical and existential issues, themes of perseverance, overcoming adversity, hope, anti-fatalism, and patriotism.

Das completed his high school in 1993, went on to complete an Intermediate of Arts (IA) in Education, and studied economics in college. He was the lead vocalist of the band Madhyanha (“Central Point”) and began his career in music in 1997 with the release of their first song, “Jindagi Ko Ke Bharosa”. This song, inspired by the Indian poet Nida Fazli, became an instant classic and remains cherished by many in Nepal. The song’s core message warns against living life on purely materialistic grounds, urging listeners to seek what is lasting and meaningful.

Early Life and Musical Influences

Born in a musical Christian home, Karna Das was immersed in music from a young age. His father, a tabla player and singer, could not pursue music after joining the Indian Army, while his mother, Ratna Devi Das, was a professional dancer who had performed alongside Bollywood actress Mala Sinha in the 1966 Nepali film Maitighar.

Raised in Pokhara, Das learned music in the church where he sang in the choir. At the age of 12, his mother gifted him his first acoustic guitar and encouraged him to pursue music. His formal guitar lessons were provided by Manish Tamang in his village. Influenced by a variety of musical genres, including western rock, Indian classical, and Nepali folk, Das was particularly moved by the poetic lyrics of Pakistani singer Ghulam Ali and Indian Ghazal legend Jagjit Singh. His love for meaningful, lyrically rich music was further inspired by his study of the Bible and philosophical texts, which provided him with a deeper perspective on life and shaped his songwriting.

Personal Life

Karna Das is married to Sima Das and has three sons. His eldest son, Markus Das, manages a recording studio in Pokhara. The family has lived in various places, including a decade-long stint in Baltimore, USA. Das has also been actively involved in managing an organic farm in Pokhara.

During Nepal’s civil war in the early 2000s, Karna Das used his music to convey messages of hope, urging perseverance and resilience in the face of adversity. His song “Thula Thula Mahal” became especially popular during this time for its call to prioritize education, vocation, and peaceful livelihoods over material wealth and power.
