Abhaya Subba (Limbu) – Personal Life and Career

Abhaya Subba, a renowned Nepalese singer-songwriter and musician, is best known as the frontwoman of the rock band Abhaya & the Steam Injuns. Born into a musically-inclined family, Abhaya’s journey into the world of music was inspired by her father. She completed her LLB studies at St. Xavier’s College in Mumbai and worked as a Radio Jockey (RJ) at Times FM in Delhi before moving on to Hits FM in Nepal. Her early music career began with the local band Parikrama in India (1993–1995), followed by stints with other rock bands such as Red Skywalkers and Punchtatva. These experiences ultimately paved the way for her success with Abhaya & the Steam Injuns, which she founded in 2003.

Abhaya’s music is influenced by iconic bands like Led Zeppelin, Blondie, The Clash, Steely Dan, and Green Day. Besides her musical career, she also contributed as a producer and judge on the local talent program Sprite Band Challenge—Freedom to Rock, where underground rock bands competed for a music contract.

She is married to Kai Weise, a local architect in Nepal, and they have a son.

Mainstream Success

Abhaya gained significant commercial and critical success with Abhaya & the Steam Injuns. Initially starting as an acoustic blues band, the band transitioned into a full-fledged rock outfit, with Abhaya as the lead vocalist and founding member. The band’s music resonates with diverse audiences, and they have played in numerous live gigs, including in hotels and lounge bars. Abhaya’s commitment to social causes also led her to create Women in Concert, a platform dedicated to supporting rising Nepali female singers and musicians.

Abhaya also served as a judge in the first edition of The Voice of Nepal, showcasing her influence in the Nepali music industry.

Concerts & Tours

Abhaya has participated in a variety of concerts and international tours with her band, Abhaya & the Steam Injuns, and other associated acts. Her concert series Women in Concert has been a major initiative to support female artists in the Nepali music scene.
