Robin Tamang: A Legendary Nepali Musician and Actor
Personal Life Robin Tamang was born in 1968 in Singapore as the youngest of five siblings in a family with a strong connection to the British Army. Due to his father’s postings, Robin spent his childhood in various locations, including Hong Kong, Singapore, and Brunei. His early exposure to diverse cultures and environments played a significant role in shaping his musical and artistic journey.
During his time in Singapore, Robin was deeply inspired by iconic musicians such as Jimi Hendrix and the rock band Deep Purple, sparking his interest in music. His passion grew during the mid-1980s when he moved to Toronto to study at Humber College. There, he formed his second band, “Tamang,” and began performing at various venues, honing his musical talents and establishing himself as a promising artist.
Musical Career In 1996, Robin returned to Nepal and settled in Pokhara at his father’s place. He joined forces with the popular blues-rock band Looza from Kathmandu, forming the group “Robin n Looza.” The band was well-received, and they recorded three albums. However, after performing together for several years, Looza disbanded in 2005.
Following his departure from Looza, Robin Tamang formed “Robin and The New Revolution,” continuing to make music and perform live. The band achieved great success with albums like Keta Keti, 13000, Hamro Desh, and Muglan. Their music became a defining element of Nepal’s rock scene, and Robin’s contributions to the genre left an indelible mark.
Acting Career In addition to his musical career, Robin Tamang was also an actor. He notably portrayed the character Yama Nadu in the popular Amazon Prime series The Last Hour, showcasing his versatile talent in the entertainment industry.
Death Robin Tamang passed away on 4 July 2023, at the age of 60, at his residence in Budhanilkantha, Nepal. His death marked the end of an era in Nepali rock music, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire musicians and fans alike.
