Jerusha Rai: A Pioneer in Nepali Indie Music
Early Life and Background
Jerusha Rai, born around 1990, is a renowned Nepali indie singer-songwriter and music producer. Hailing from Khotang, her family moved to Kathmandu, where she grew up. Rai attended St. Mary’s Secondary School in Jawalakhel, Kathmandu, and was deeply immersed in Nepali folk music and instruments from a young age. As a teenager, she formed Nepal’s first all-girl band, marking the start of her musical journey. She was inspired by Western artists like Alanis Morissette as well as local Nepali acts, which led her to begin writing her own songs.
Moving Abroad and Finding Her Sound
In 2010, Jerusha relocated to London for university studies. While in the UK, she became involved with the Nepali diaspora music scene, jamming with other artists and refining her skills. During this time, Rai self-released her first EP, We All Make Mistapes, alongside singles that gained attention. Her track “Oblivion” went viral online, helping her build a fanbase and establish her presence in the indie music scene.
Debut Album: A Dark Place to Think
Jerusha Rai’s breakthrough came with the release of her debut album A Dark Place to Think in 2016. Rai’s creativity shone through as she wrote, produced, recorded, and designed the entire album herself. The intimate record dealt with themes of displacement, isolation, and melancholy. Rai’s evocative songwriting resonated deeply with listeners, and her ability to convey personal emotions through her music garnered widespread acclaim.
Second Album: Sunsaan
In 2019, Jerusha released her second album, Sunsaan, which featured more of her native language and explored themes of Nepal’s political turmoil and mental health issues. Songs like “Barud,” which reflected on the Nepalese Civil War, became beloved hits and further established her as a powerful voice in the Nepali music scene. Sunsaan showcased her growing maturity as an artist, blending folk sounds with contemporary elements.
Legacy and Disappearance
Throughout her career, Jerusha Rai has celebrated her indigenous Kiranti roots, using music as a medium for healing. Her works have been praised not only for their emotional depth but also for their ability to speak to important social and political issues. In 2022, Rai returned to Nepal to perform, continuing to gain international recognition while splitting her time between the US and UK.
However, in 2023, Jerusha Rai mysteriously disappeared after leaving her Kathmandu home without her phone. Despite police efforts, her whereabouts remain unknown, leaving the Nepali music community shocked. Her unresolved disappearance has left a void in the indie music scene, where she was revered as a pioneering female artist and a powerful creative voice.
