Mausami Gurung: A Renowned Nepali Singer and Songwriter

Mausami Gurung (Nepali: मौसमी गुरुङ) is a celebrated Nepali singer and songwriter known for her melodious voice and versatile contributions to the music industry. Her music has earned her a special place in the hearts of Nepali audiences, and she continues to captivate listeners with her songs.

Childhood

Mausami Gurung is the eldest daughter of Naina Singh Gurung and Chini Maya Gurung-Ciszar. She has two siblings, a brother and a sister. As a child, she was very shy but had a deep love for singing. She often participated in school functions and performed songs like Sapana Sapana and Yo Karma Bhumiko Aaga at an event in Lukhnow, India, where she sang alongside army personnel. Her father was a former Indian Army officer, and his transfers meant the whole family moved frequently.

Education

Gurung received her early education in Dehradun, India, and attended Centre School, where children of army personnel were enrolled. She completed her schooling through the U.P. Board and pursued higher education in India.

Career

Mausami moved to Nepal in 2001 with the primary goal of obtaining her citizenship. She began her formal music training at Gandharva Sangeet Kala Kendra and spent four years honing her skills. After passing a voice test from Radio Nepal, her musical career took off. She made her debut with the album “Unforgettable” in 2060 BS (2003), which featured songs like Parelimai Chhau Ki Kaso and Mero Maan. These tracks introduced her to Nepali audiences and established her presence in the Nepali music scene.

Mausami went on to record several popular songs, including Chayngba Oi Chyangba with The Unity Band (Nepal), a remix that became a massive hit. Her other notable songs include Kanchi Hey Kanchi, Machi Marana, Jhumke Phooli, and Ma Roop Hu. In addition to her music career, she has also contributed playback singing for over 14 Nepali movies, such as Itihas, Jwalamukhi, Paley Dai, and Aagni.

Apart from music, Mausami has lent her voice to several advertisements, including Fair & Lovely, Dabur, Rajhans, Pepsodent, and Frooti. She has performed live concerts not only in Nepal but also internationally, in countries such as Belgium, Hong Kong, the United States, and the United Kingdom. In 2012, she released the album “Mahasus”, which featured popular tracks like Sheetal Sheetal and Naya Mausam Cha, both of which received great responses from her fans.

Personal Life

Mausami Gurung is married to Resham Gurung. In March 2014, she was diagnosed with a brain tumor after experiencing dizziness and headaches. The surgery was successfully performed, and although the tumor was not life-threatening, the doctor advised her to take several months of rest to fully recover. During this time, she temporarily suspended her singing career to focus on her health.
