Bibek Waiba Lama, better known by his stage name Vek, is a dynamic and talented Nepali singer who has taken the music scene by storm. Vek gained widespread recognition through his participation in the singing reality show The Voice of Nepal, which served as a springboard for his burgeoning career. Since then, his relatable lyrics, upbeat music, and charming nature have endeared him to fans, making him a standout performer.

An Ordinary Start

Vek’s musical journey began in Kathmandu, where he was influenced by his brother’s love for rock music. As a teenager, he developed an affinity for pop and punk rock. Although he rarely sang at school, he was once selected by Radio Nepal to perform at one of its programs, a memorable experience that ignited his passion for singing.

It wasn’t until high school that Vek truly began to explore his vocal talents. Initially a bassist and backing vocalist in a rock band, he stepped up as the lead singer during a performance of “Born to be Wild” by Steppenwolf when the original lead singer was unavailable. This experience solidified his love for singing.

Despite an unsuccessful attempt to obtain a visa to Japan after high school, Vek used the time to broaden his music library and upload cover songs on YouTube. These covers eventually caught the attention of a studio, which offered to help him record his music.

A Career with Covers

Vek’s cover of Passenger’s “Let Her Go” was his first recorded song and performed well. As his confidence grew, he continued recording covers and gradually transitioned to writing his own music. With the support of Class X Presentation, Vek began working on original songs, drawing inspiration from personal experiences, including heartbreak.

Voice of Nepal and Afterwards

Encouraged by his elder brother, Vek auditioned for The Voice of Nepal and made it to the semifinals. The experience taught him valuable lessons about stage presence and performance, which he applies to his shows today.

After the show, Vek released singles such as “Kina,” “Lai Bari Lai,” and “Eklai Jiuna Sike,” which resonated with audiences. His ability to create both contemplative sad songs and energetic dance tracks has made him a favorite among young listeners.

Prioritizing Performances

Vek is known for his high-energy performances, incorporating backtracks and dancers to keep the audience engaged. He even jumps into the crowd, a practice inspired by rock stars.

Recent Achievements

Recently, Vek released his 28-track debut album “Sampanna.” Despite challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, he remains optimistic about touring to promote his album once conditions improve.
